RFEF criticise VAR in Athletic Bilbao-Valencia clash

The Spanish FA (RFEF) has launched an attack on VAR – following controversy in the weekend game between Athletic Bilbao and Valencia.

Valencia midfielder Denis Cheryshev scored the winner in a 1-0 victory at San Mames, however the goal was only confirmed following a lengthy consultation with VAR.

The video assistant referee ruled no offside against Moi Gomez in the build up to the goal, and the RFEF has requested an investigation into VAR provider Mediapro.

"The provider has displayed images of a hypothetical offside line in this incident.

"But that does not correspond with the role of VAR.

"These images offer a distorted view of the game

"This can create alarm amongst supporters and question the skills of both Spanish referees and the importance of VAR."

Mediapro are yet to comment on the RFEF statement, but the Spanish football authorities have confirmed they will pursue an investigation into the current VAR providers.
