Bartomeu ‘sure Lionel Messi will stay at Barcelona’

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu believes Argentine striker Lionel Messi will stay beyond 2021, according to Mundo Deportivo

In an interview conceded with the club's in-house television station, Barça TV, the Barcelona President spoke of a range of issues – with Messi being the principal topic of discussion.

When speaking of the clubs record goalscorer, Bartomeu confirmed: "It's true that Messi could leave before the end of the 2020/2021 season to retire from football or to go where we wants to.

"We had a similar situation with Xavi Hernández, who went to Qatar, Andrés Iniesta, who signed for Kobe in Japan and Carles Puyol, who had to retire with an injury, but all of them gave us everything and had posibilites to stay longer term."

Although the doubt about Messi's continuation in Çan Barça lingers on, the President remains optimistic he will stay for the foreseeable future:

"I am very relaxed as President because Leo is very Barcelonista and I have no doubts thats he will at the club beyond that 2020/2021 season."
