Ferland Mendy can be Real Madrid’s new Roberto Carlos – Karembeu

New Real Madrid full-back Ferland Mendy can be the club’s ‘next Roberto Carlos’, according to former midfielder Christian Karembeu.

The France international joined Los Blancos in a €55m deal from Lyon earlier this month and, with question marks over Marcelo’s long-term form, may be tipped to be a regular starter.

Karembeu played alongside Carlos for Madrid in the latter half of the 1990s and he sees similar qualities in his fellow Frenchman.

“I think the signing of Ferland Mendy by Real Madrid is a good opportunity for the player and he will be very important in Zinedine Zidane's new project,” Karembeu told L’Equipe, in quotes cited by Diario AS.

“He can also play on the right side and it could be the next Roberto Carlos or the next Marcelo.”
