Iker Casillas congratulates Lionel Messi on matching La Liga record

Iker Casillas has congratulated Barcelona's Lionel Messi for equalling his La Liga record of 334 victories but admitted he wanted it to be a Real Madrid player.

The Argentine star was instrumental in Saturday’s Catalan derby victory over Espanyol for the Blaugrana, meaning that on a personal level he equalled the goalkeeper’s league record.

“Of course, I would rather that it was a Real Madrid player who matched it, but those records are in place to be broken,” Casillas told an interview with Marca.

“It will be very tough for any player to better this total and he will receive the recognition he thoroughly deserves.”

Now aged 37, the former Madrid stopper joined FC Porto in 2016 and has established himself as the number one shot stopper at the Portuguese giants, recently stating he wanted to continue playing until he turns 40.
