Jordi Alba to sign new Barcelona contract

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has stepped in to speed up contract renewal negotiations with defender Jordi Alba, say Diario Sport.

Last month, Cadena Ser reported that an agreement had already been struck between the player and the club, but fresh reports say the negotiations are still ongoing.

Alba’s contract at the Camp Nou has entered its final 18 months, despite the Spaniard being Barca’s first-choice left-back and in fine form.

Sport say that prior to this week, only one formal meeting between the two had been held but a new meeting has been set following the Blaugrana’s Champions League first leg clash against Olympique Lyonnais.

Bartomeu would be willing to extend Alba’s deal until the summer of 2024, which is likely to see him retire at the Catalan giants.

The left-back’s current deal at the Camp Nou expires in June 2020 and possesses a €150m release clause but he wants an improved contract.

Juventus and Manchester United are said to be among the clubs interested in a possible move for the Spain international.

Alba has played more than 250 matches for Barca after his 2012 move from Valencia with his last renewal penned in 2015.
