Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone is hopeful captain Diego Godin remains with the club beyond the current season, with his contract expiring in June.
Italian giants Inter are said to be holding discussions with the Uruguayan central defender, who Simeone believes is ‘fundamental’ to his side.
“My idea is for Atletico Madrid to continue with Diego Godin, he is fundamental for us,” Simeone told reporters, as cited by Marca.
“He is our captain and a great leader in the team, he has played three fantastic games in a row and we want him to maintain this incredible level.
“I do not want to speak at length about player comings and goings because that is not my job.
“The win over Levante? It was one of our strongest performances of the season, we did really well not to leave Stefan Savic’s injury impact us, or the disallowed goal, and Levante are very strong opponents.
“My reaction at the end? I wanted to hug my players, I was emotional because of the fantastic levels of effort they put in today.”
