Valencia boss Marcelino: Players looked like dancers on icy Alaves pitch!

Valencia boss Marcelino claimed ‘the players looked like dancers trying not to fall’ on Alaves’ icy pitch during his side’s 2-1 Liga defeat on Saturday.

Alaves leapfrogged Real Madrid into fourth place and opened a nine-point lead over Valencia as Borja Baston and Tomas Pina goals cancelled out Dani Parejo’s early finish.

The result left Los Che down in 11th, nine points adrift of the Basques, but Marcelino was more angry with the slippery Mendizorroza turf.

“Of course [the game should’ve been postponed],” he said after the game.

“I think that at 9 in the morning, it was known that the field would be frozen at 4 in the afternoon.

“I’d never seen a match in the Premier League with half an icy pitch, but I want to make it clear that it’s not an excuse.

“We have to make sure that we have some of the best playing surfaces in the world. The players looked like dancers trying not to fall and that happened in the year 2019.

“I repeat that it’s not an apology for the result. I make that very clear and it’s evident.”
