Atletico Madrid take second place after Club Brugge stalemate

Diego Simeone insists Atletico Madrid have no regrets, despite finishing second in their Champions League group after a 0-0 draw with Club Brugge.

Atleti’s stalemate in Belgium and Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 victory over Monaco saw the German side go through as Group A winners, courtesy of a superior head-to-head record.

It leaves Los Colchoneros at risk of a tougher last-16 draw, but Simeone made it clear he was happy just to have seen his side progress.

“I’m happy because we’ve reached the last 16 and that’s very important for the club,” the Coach told Movistar+ after the game.

“The club needed to be in the last 16, so we have to be happy about that. Now we have to wait and see who we get and keep trying to improve.

“It was a good game from us. We were the better team in the first half and had chances to score.

“The second was more even, but I leave here with the peace of mind that that the lads gave everything and only lacked the precision to score a goal.

“We don’t know how the draw will pan out, but it’ll be what it’ll be. I’m happy with how we played and only lacked precision.

“We had control of the ball. The team had a great game and never stopped wanting to win. We lacked precision and in football that’s key.”
