Barcelona eye Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has emerged as a January transfer target for Barcelona, according to Diario Sport.

The Catalan-based outfit say the Denmark international is one of two priority defensive targets for the Blaugrana, alongside Cologne defender and Spain Under-21 international Jorge Mere.

Samuel Umtiti’s ongoing knee injuries and the possibility of requiring surgery in the coming weeks, which would lead to a significant lay-off.

Due to the sales of Yerry Mina and Javier Mascherano this year, only Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet and Thomas Vermaelen – who himself has had numerous injuries – are available in the position.

Barca’s preference is said to be a six-month loan deal until the end of the campaign with an option to buy the defender following that spell.

The club’s long-term target remains to be Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt although such a move in January has already been ruled out.
