Barcelona’s Lionel Messi: Gerard Pique didn’t mean to score!

Lionel Messi insists Gerard Pique did not mean to score Barcelona’s second goal against PSV. “My free kick went wrong!”

“I found out about it recently,” the No 10 – who scored his 106th Champions League goal on Wednesday to become the player with the most strikes for one team in the competition – said after the game.

“I wasn’t aware of it, but I’m happy for this statistic and happy to win another game.

“My free kick went wrong and Geri was at the right place at the right time. He saw the ball and took it on.

“We lost the ball a lot, especially in the first half, gave away many counterattacks and they had their chances.

“At 2-0 they had more of the ball and they had tall players going up for crosses, which were complicated to defend.

“It was also difficult for us to get the ball because they put on another striker. Ousmane had a great game, as did the whole team.

“The important thing was to win to qualify in first place. We leave here with our mission accomplished.

“We’re always prepared for the knockouts, but many things happen during a season because there are so many games.

“Talking about what can happen in February is complicated, but we’re always ready for what comes next.”
