Abelardo: Only Alaves focus on avoiding relegation

Alaves Coach Abelardo Fernandez insists his side’s target for the season is still to avoid relegation despite sitting second in La Liga.

Sunday’s late 2-1 victory over Villarreal brought the Basque side into second in La Liga, with 20 points from their opening 10 games.

“The reality is we have to fight for permanence and our place in the top flight,” Abelardo told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“It is fantastic to have 20 points from a possible 30 and there are many teams in this area of the table who maybe did not expect to be there, so a lot can chance.

“As a Coach, I am in my position to win games because if I do not then I will lose my job, so I do not care what possession my team has if we can generate seven chances like we did today.

“We have a fantastic ability to fight until the final whistle, it shows our mentality and focus to defeat superior teams like Real Madrid and Villarreal in the last minute.

“The first half was not bad but we did not play as we should until the last 20 minutes.”
