Neymar: I’m a Number 10, but don’t compare me to Lionel Messi

Neymar has clarified he is enjoying playing in the ‘Number 10’ role for Paris Saint-Germain but insisted he did not want comparisons to Lionel Messi.

The Brazilian has played in a more central position under Coach Thomas Tuchel rather than from the flank and has helped the club to a 100% start to their domestic campaign.

“My preferred position is a Number 10, it allows me to dictate the game and help my teammates,” Neymar told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“It was not my decision to play in this role but the choice of the Coach, and I play with the same approach that I did when at Santos and Barcelona.

“It allows me to create opportunities and be in positions to score but mainly it gives me many opportunities with the ball.

“I do not want to be compared with Lionel Messi because of this or anything else.”

Neymar went on to describe a ‘tough’ summer and recovery process from injury: “I did everything I possibly could to be fit for the tournament, but I became frustrated.

“I do not want to complain forever, now I have more reasons to be happy than sad.”
