Dani Olmo opens door to Croatia

Dinamo Zagreb winger Dani Olmo has confirmed he wants to switch international allegiance from Spain to Croatia.

The 20-year-old has represented La Roja up to Under-18 level but his move from Barcelona to Zagreb in 2015 has led to attempts to gain Croatian citizenship.

“I want to be called-up to the Spain Under-21 squad,” Olmo told an interview with Diario AS.

“My dream since I was a boy was to play for Spain but the call has not come so why not, I would love to represent this nation (Croatia).

“The paperwork (for his Croatian passport) has been done and that opens the door for the move, it would be an honour to play alongside the likes of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic.”

Olmo’s fine form at club level has led to a nomination for the 2018 Golden Boy award – handed to the best Under-21 player of the year.

“It is an honour to be recognised at this level,” Olmo added.
