Simeone ‘backs players’ on US move

Atletico Madrid Coach Diego Simeone has backed the league’s players over their opposition stance on La Liga games in the United States.

Last week, the players announced their official resistance to the plans and did not rule out the possibility of going on strike should they go ahead.

Simeone’s comments follow on from those of his Barcelona and Real Madrid counterparts Ernesto Valverde and Julen Lopetegui, who both voiced concern on any move.

“I will always be on the side of the players, because I was a footballer not so long ago,” Simeone told reporters.

“I understand the needs the players have and also the concerns over this talk, they are the spokesmen of what they perceive and read of the game.

“I hope that we all can listen to them because just like in life, with development and growth it is always better to look for the best.

“I believe that with dialogue the league can grow, but also economically the league has grown and that is an important step for all clubs.

“I think, take away all the dialogues and from what I believe in this situation, is that the determining factor here is always the players.

“But with good talks, we can all get what we want from the league.”
