Inter concede Modric defeat

Inter boss Luciano Spalletti has conceded defeat in his club’s attempts to sign Luka Modric. “Real Madrid will want to count on such a talented player.”

Reports in Italy had claimed that Modric wanted to join Inter, but Spalletti appeared to side with those in Marca and AS, which insist the midfielder will sign a new contract with Madrid.

“I don’t know what will happen, but I’m just happy that someone like Modric who won the Champions League and was in the World Cup Final wanted to join us,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“The fact he would’ve liked to wear the Inter jersey fills me with joy. I think it’s difficult to get players like that, and the club did very well to create the right interest around him.

“I don’t think he will come, because Real Madrid still want to count on such a talented player. We’re a strong side regardless, and if Modric were to join us, we’d be very strong.”

The Croatian came on as a substitute during Los Blancos’ 3-1 win against Milan in the Bernabeu Trophy on Saturday and was given a very warm welcome.

The fans chanted his name and urged him to stay, while he responded positively to the crowd.
