Atleti face competition for Kalinic

Atletico Madrid could face competition in their pursuit of Milan striker Nikola Kalinic.

The Croatia international, sent home from the World Cup by his country after refusing to come on as a substitute against Nigeria, is currently on tour in the United States with his club.

However, after the latest Milan friendly when they lost on penalties to Manchester United after a 1-1 draw, new director of football Leonardo revealed that Atleti are not the only club chasing the 30-year-old’s signature.

“With Kalinic there are various alternatives and it’s not only Atletico Madrid who want to sign the player,” Leonardo told reporters.

“We are having dialogue with his representatives, but an agreement has still not been reached.”

Atleti boss Diego Simeone sees Kalinic as back-up to main striker Diego Costa and would like to take him to the Wanda Metropolitano on loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy that could amount to €20m.

Nonetheless, if Los Rojiblancos are unsuccessful in securing the Croatian then, according to reports in Spain, they are understood to be ready to make a move for Chelsea’s French international Olivier Giroud
