Simeone ‘not surprised’ by Godin talk

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone says he is not surprised over speculation linking Diego Godin with a move to Juventus.

The Uruguay international has emerged as a possible target for Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri as the Bianconeri look to strengthen their defence for an assault on the Champions League next season.

Nonetheless, Simeone remains calm over the rumours and stressed that in football it is a fact of life that the best players want to play at the biggest clubs.

“It’s normal and we are used to it that the best players want to go to the best teams,” the Argentine told a Press conference ahead of Atleti’s International Champions Cup clash with Arsenal in Singapore.

“So, something such as this does not surprise me at all. It’s not just Godin but also true for all big players.

“One thing I can say is that this club is growing and wants to compete with the best clubs in the world. It’s going to be an exciting year for our supporters.”

Simeone was also asked about new signing Gelson Martins, who has penned a five-year deal with Los Colchoneros after his move from Sporting, and he says he is excited to have captured the 23-year-old winger.

“Gelson is a boy who is constantly improving. We saw it last year and his characteristics will help us.

“He will give us more competitiveness on the right wing and in attack if we choose to play three up front,” he maintained.
