Atletico Madrid meet for Giroud

Atletico Madrid are considering a deal to sign striker Olivier Giroud from Chelsea this summer, according to reports.

Sky Sport Italia say the interest stems from Atleti’s proposed move for Nikola Kalinic stalling, with the club said to be losing patience with Milan.

Giroud only joined Chelsea in January from Arsenal but the FA Cup winners are prepared to sanction an exit due to their pursuit of Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain, according to transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio.

There has been a meeting in London between Atleti and Chelsea officials regarding the Frenchman, who helped his side to a World Cup triumph despite not finding the net during the tournament.

The breakdown in Los Rojiblancos interest in Kalinic appears to be due to Milan’s recent takeover by the Elliott Management Corporation, leading to uncertainty regarding transfers.

That is said to have had a subsequent domino affect in the transfer market with a withdrawal of their approach for Valencia’s Simone Zaza, which is in turn holding up Kevin Gameiro’s move from Atleti to the Mestalla.
