Ziganda ‘truly sorry’ for Athletic season

Outgoing Athletic Bilbao Coach Jose Angel Ziganda admitted he was ‘truly sorry’ over his tenure at the club but remains optimistic on ‘new ideas’ for next season.

Eduardo Berizzo is widely reported to be replacing Ziganda, who was upgraded from Bilbao Athletic Coach last summer to replace Ernesto Valverde but could only guide his side to a disappointing 16th.

“I’m deeply frustrated and of course I am sad,” Ziganda told reporters after Sunday’s defeat to Espanyol.

“This has been a poor season for the club and I know that as a supporter, for me this was an amazing opportunity as Coach but nothing has gone as I would have wanted – I am truly sorry.

“In football you must accept that things can go this way but also I must take responsibility for how poorly the season has gone, but we can all learn from this.

“We have struggled against opponents both physically and mentally and this defeat again reflected this, and it hurts us.

“The important thing for the club is to keep moving forward and trying to improve, I am confident that will happen with new, fresh ideas.

“A lot of changes will be made and the reinforcement will benefit us all.”
