Thomas Vermaelen could miss the World Cup after the Belgian injured his hamstring during Barcelona’s 5-4 defeat to Levante on Sunday.
Vermaelen lasted just 31 minutes of the match at Ciutat de Valencia, and Barca’s official Twitter confirmed the defender had picked up ‘a hamstring injury in his right leg’.
Although more tests are needed to determine the extent of his problem, the 32-year-old’s crocked past suggests he could be facing a spell on the sidelines, potentially ruling him out of the Russian showpiece next month.
Despite his proneness to injury, Vermaelen has nonetheless managed 20 appearances for the Liga champions this season.
