‘Torres iconic at Atleti’ – Cholo

Atletico Madrid Coach Diego Simeone has hailed his side’s resilience in defeating Levante and included special praise for Fernando Torres.

The 34-year-old striker – who will leave the club at the end of the campaign – netted his 100th La Liga goal for the club in the 3-0 victory over the Valencia-based club.

“I was happy with how we responded to the result three days earlier,” Simeone told reporters, as cited by Diario AS.

“This was a match we had to win and make a strong performance and we have done that – you would not know that we had played on Thursday.

“Fernando’s (Torres) performance? He was very important but so was the whole team; each of our three games were all very beautiful and the team were cohesive, moving in the same direction.

“It makes me happy for Fernando to be living the incredible feelings he has for this club and regardless of whether or not he scores goals, he is iconic at Atletico.

“I told him when he signed that I wanted him to be a footballer and not an idol, and he has been.”
