Abelardo’s Alaves take survival step

Abelardo Fernandez’s Alaves took a huge step towards survival with a 2-0 victory over Getafe on Saturday.

Goals from Victor Laguardia and Munir El Haddadi gave Alaves their 12th win in 22 games under Abelardo, who has taken the Basques from bottom of La Liga to 13 points clear of the relegation zone.

“The match wasn’t that eye-catching, but we were very complete against a team that don’t let you play and are very intense,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“The first half was tight, with very few chances, but Laguardia’s opener was crucial and allowed us to dominate.

“We’ve taken another step [to safety], but there are still seven games left to play, although today was a momentous game, which we won and have to celebrate.

“It was difficult to keep picking up points at the pace we did, but our last two games marked a return to what we were before our three defeats.

“I’m also happy that we picked up another clean sheet. I take pride in coaching these players for how they carry themselves and because they give everything for this badge.”
