Jorge Valdano, a World Cup winner with Argentina, has blasted his national side after their 6-1 capitulation to Spain on Tuesday.
The former Real Madrid and Valencia Coach believes Lionel Messi is their ‘only hope’ of winning the World Cup and described the result as a ‘catastrophe’.
“With this loss, Argentina will have to go through a lot of hard work and thinking right until the World Cup starts,” Valdano told reporters, as cited by Marca.
“This result is terrible for Argentina, what happened today was a catastrophe – our nation should not be losing by such scorelines.
“Messi is the only reason to give Argentina any hope of winning the World Cup, although from what I saw of Meza’s level today, then we have another real footballer on our hands – he is ready for Europe.
“Higuain is haunted with Argentina, I am sure of it and I would not like to be in Sampaoli’s situation.”
