Asensio eyes World Cup role

Marco Asensio is confident of landing a place in the Spain World Cup squad and believes ‘there is strong competition throughout the squad’.

The Real Madrid winger played a starring role in Tuesday’s 6-1 victory over Argentina and assisted in the second goal, which was scored by his club teammate Isco.

“Everybody has a chance for a making the final World Cup and there is strong competition throughout the squad – there is a long list,” Asensio – who replaced David Silva in the side – is cited as saying by Cadena Cope.

“Right now the players are all playing well and effectively, and the month of April is very important for all of us not just personally but for our clubs.

“Isco demonstrated that when you are given the opportunity you must seize it and now it will be impossible not to look at him.

“We played a fantastic game against a great opponent, I am very happy with the match, the victory and my performance.”
