Alaves move clear with Villarreal victory

Abelardo Fernandez confessed Alaves’ run was “not normal” after they moved seven points clear of La Liga’s relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Villarreal.

Rodrigo Ely and Ibai Gomez scored either side of half-time at Villarreal, meaning Alaves have now picked up 19 points from a possible 30 under Abelardo – in stark contrast to the six they had from their opening 13 games.

“You suffer in La Liga and we suffered even more,” he said after Saturday’s game.

“Villarreal are a great team in form, and they showed it. We have defended well and countered well, although they had chances to draw.

“The team’s work was impressive. It’s a prestigious victory, we’re competing with the big sides and that lets us grow.

“Our mentality is improving day by day. Now we have to prepare for the match against Deportivo.

“We’ve come out of an agonising situation, but it’s still difficult. We’ve picked up 19 points out of 30 while I’ve been here, but it’s not normal. The players deserve all the credit.”
