Vrsaljko extends Atleti deal

Atletico Madrid defender Sime Vrsaljko has extended his contract at the club until June 2022, the club have confirmed.

The 26-year-old had been linked strongly with a January exit from the club, with Italian league leaders Napoli reportedly lodging several bids.

However, the Croatian has since made a return to Atleti’s starting XI, often starting in place of 33-year-old Juanfran and putting in a string of impressive performances.

The full-back has now added an extra 12 months to his previous deal at the Wanda Metropolitano in a show of commitment to the club.

“I am very happy to be able to continue growing here,” the defender said in a statement.

“I feel very comfortable and the only thing I'm thinking about is working each day to give importance to the team.”

Vrsaljko joined Los Rojiblancos from Sassuolo in the summer of 2016 for €16m.
