Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has called on his side to focus on winning the Champions League this season: “our only realistic trophy”.
Los Blancos were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Leganes on Wednesday while they trail La Liga leaders Barcelona by 19 points at the midway stage in the season.
“We only have the Champions League left in our season, we must be realistic,” Carvajal is quoted as saying by Marca.
“The league leaders have a big points advantage so the chances are we are not competing for that title this season.
“This is a very tough situation for the players, it’s painful but we have to learn from this as the situation is not good enough from us.
“Leganes took advantage of our mistakes and we could not take our chances, even though we tried to win the match we were not able to.
“This is difficult for us in this moment, but we must work harder now more than ever and focus on the remaining chance of a trophy.”
