Athletic Bilbao have not received an offer from Real Madrid for goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga despite press reports, the club have confirmed.

The Spain international’s deal at San Mames expires in June 2018 with reports in the Spanish press suggesting Madrid will pay his €20m buyout clause in January to quicken the move.

“There has been no offer from Madrid or any club,” club president Josu Urrutia told a press conference.

“We know of the reports but we have not been negotiating with any club for him and there has been nothing from the player’s representatives to suggest otherwise.

“We are not a selling club and for a player to leave he must first state his intention to move on and then his buyout clause must be met.

“We do not yet have an answer on a new contract but we must remain positive and our job is to exhaust every possible avenue to allow him to stay and renew.

The door is not closed and this is a long process but we must continue to be patient.”
