Diego Simeone claims he watched Valencia-Villarreal instead of the Clasico after Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 defeat to Espanyol.
Sergio Garcia’s 88th-minute strike condemned Atleti to their first loss of the season in La Liga and left them nine points behind leaders Barcelona, and Simeone had no complaints with the result.
“It was a tough match, with two very organised teams,” the Coach said after the game.
“Tactically, they were very good. Whoever had that one chance and put it away seemed likeliest to win the game, and that’s what happened.
“First defeat before the Clasico? I was going to watch Valencia-Villarreal instead…
“Despite this, we’ve still had a very good first half to the season. Hopefully it’ll be 20 games before our next defeat.
“The players have made a good start in the League. We lost, but we’ll congratulate our rivals and keep working.”
