Abelardo: Las Palmas game ‘not decisive’

Alaves Coach Abelardo Fernandez believes his side’s match against Las Palmas on Friday night is ‘important but not decisive’ in the relegation fight.

The Basque side rose off bottom spot on Monday night with a dramatic 3-2 win at Girona on Monday night and now host 18th-placed Las Palmas, who defeated Real Betis 1-0 last weekend.

“The game against Las Palmas is important but it is not decisive,” Abelardo told his pre-match press conference.

“The initial response from the players to what we have attempted is very positive and everybody at the club has been extremely supportive, now I must give 200% to get things right.

“The victory at Girona will give euphoria to the fans but not to the players, confidence yes but it does not change our approach or our mindset.

“The fans here are fantastic and have been so supportive, they deserved Monday night’s victory but they also deserve many more.

“We have to be stronger defensively as we cannot come back like that in every game, we must not let our intensity drop and we must maintain our defensive discipline too.”
