Athletic will ‘try everything’ for Kepa stay

Athletic Bilbao president Josu Urrutia has confirmed the club will do all they can to renew the contract of Real Madrid target Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Spanish international goalkeeper’s contract at the San Mames expires in June 2018 and he will be free to talk to other clubs in June, while Madrid are said to be keen to trigger his €20m release clause in January.

“We will try every option available for Kepa to remain at the club,” Urrutia told an interview with Marca.

“Of course we cannot be entirely confident of what the player’s decision will be, but there will be a decision and we hope that one is that he stays with us.

“This is not time-specific and it is not the first time we have held negotiations with a player whose contract is nearly up.

“We are not concerned about anything other than trying to get a deal which is best for the club.”
