Carvajal: Madrid can catch Barca

Dani Carvajal insists Real Madrid can close their 10-point gap on Barcelona “if we all keep demanding the maximum from ourselves.”

Madrid’s goalless draw with Atletico in the Derbi on Saturday was preceded by Barca beating Leganes 3-0, but while Carvajal admitted he was ‘angry’ with his side’s failure to win at Wanda Metropolitano, he made it clear they could still turn things around.

“I’m angry because we didn’t win and dropped two points,” the right-back, who made his comeback after almost two months out with a heart problem, said after the game.

“I felt good on the pitch, with strength and good physical tone. I really wanted to get back playing, and coming back from an injury is always something to be happy about.

“Ten points behind Barca? It’s a considerable distance, but the team have given everything and we’ve all given our maximum.

“If we all keep demanding the maximum from ourselves, we can close that gap. Few chances against Atleti? They’re very strong defensively.

“They had some chances, but so did we. The game died off towards the end due to tiredness and we couldn’t make it 1-0.

“Lucas’ kick on Ramos? I saw it from quite far out. Sergio got his head on the ball, but Lucas hit him on the nose.”
