Simeone: We needed killer instinct

Diego Simeone has lamented his side’s lack of ‘killer instinct’ in the final third after Wednesday’s draw with Segunda B side Elche.

Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by the side in Spain’s third tier while Simeone believes it was a case of his side being wasteful in front of goal rather than any lack of desire that cost them.

“I liked our first half,” Simeone is quoted as telling reported by Marca.

“Augusto Fernandez had rhythm, Vietto and Torres had three openings each, Thomas was having a good game, [Miguel Angel] Moya had the right mentality to transmit calmness to the defence.

“I cannot question the player’s desire as may sometimes be the case with teams playing in these sorts of games, the only piece missing was our success in front of goal and our killer instinct.

“Elche did very well at the start of the second half but then we had more chances, but the game is still open ahead of the second leg.

“We have to keep working and creating chances, unfortunately Vietto did not look sharp but his performances were strong – you have to be patient and confidence will reappear naturally.”
