Mikel Vesga has extended his contract at Athletic Club Bilbao by a further two years until June 2021, it has been confirmed.
The 24-year-old has established himself in Jose Angel Ziganda’s first team at the San Mames, making 12 starts from a possible 15 this season.
Having spent the second half of last season on loan at Sporting Gijon – where he made 17 top flight appearances – the central midfielder has now tied down his future to Athletic.
“He has to score five or six goals per season,” Ziganda is quoted as saying by Diario AS.
“He possesses all the qualities he needs to get into goal-scoring positions and he's playing at a better level now since he's been switched from the pivot position. He's versatile and that's a point in his favour.”
His release clause at the Basque giants remains set at €30m and he scored the only goal as Athletic recorded their sole victory in their last 10 games, against Sevilla.
