Marcelino: Kondogbia ban is unfair

Marcelino has called Geoffrey Kondogbia’s two-game Copa del Rey ban for a suspension dating back four seasons as ‘unfair’.

The French midfielder was sent-off whilst playing for Sevilla in the 2012-13 semi-final against Atletico Madrid and should have served the ban at his new club, Monaco, the following season.

However, an error from the Ligue 1 club meant they were unaware of such a suspension and now the ban has over and the 24-year-old is unavailable for both ties against Real Zaragoza –Valencia won the first leg 2-0 on Tuesday night.

“We’ve been aware of this situation for a few days and it’s a strange one,” Marcelino told his press conference.

“We just had to deal with it in the first round, we have no other option. We understand the two-game ban was pending but it is unfair it falls on Valencia, as it was not our mistake.”

Kondogbia has started seven La Liga games for Los Che since completing a summer loan switch from Inter.
