The threat of postponement has overshadowed the build-up to Celta Vigo’s clash with Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Marca reports Celta asked La Liga on Friday to suspend their match against Atleti after wildfires swept Portugal and Spain, causing damage to part of their Balaidos stadium [pictured], where the game was due to be played.

The Galicians would have also looked into the possibility of the encounter being moved to Wanda Metropolitano, but the newspaper notes the League did not feel there was enough of a reason for postponement, while works were being carried out at the visitors’ arena.

Furthermore, their request for a giant screen to be fitted at nearby Castrelos Park, which would have allowed fans with tickets in the damaged section of Balaidos to still watch the game, was rejected due to a wrangle over television rights.

Celta President Carlos Mourino issued a public apology to supporters but also asked for their understanding, given the situation was out of the club’s control.

He also pledged to refund those that bought tickets to the parts of the stadium that were closed off.

As for team news, Celta have right-back Hugo Mallo and top goalscorer Maxi Gomez at their disposal again, while Emre Mor’s ankle has healed in time.

Atleti, on the other hand, are without key midfielders Yannick Carrasco and Koke due to injury, so Angel Correa is likely to move to the right wing, with Saul Niguez moving out to the left.
