Berizzo calls for stadium safety

Celta Vigo Coach Eduardo Berizzo wants Vigo mayor Abel Caballero to ensure the club’s Balaidos stadium is up to all the relevant safety standards.

The comments come in the wake of the damage to the roof inflicted on the city-owned stadium’s leading to Sunday’s La Liga clash between Celta and Real Madrid being postponed, with work already beginning to ensure all relevant renovations are carried out ahead of the club’s next home game – a Europa League clash with Shakhtar Donestk on 16th February.

"Regardless of whether this happened or not, the stadium needs a full inspection," Berizzo is reported as saying by AS.

"What happened at Balaidos [the postponement against Real] made me think that, in the game we played there three days earlier against Alaves, something could have happened that we wouldn't have wanted.

"That is something we must learn from. We have to play in a stadium that is safe and comfortable for the fans, who are the ones that sustain this sport we all love."

The Galician stadium is currently undergoing renovations which will see an increase of capacity to 31,000 with fans brought closer to the pitch.
