Atleti struggle in Qarabag stalemate

Atletico Madrid are still without a win in the Champions League this season after a dour 0-0 draw with Qarabag on Wednesday.

Qarabag had lost both of their opening games in Group C, including a 6-0 hammering by Chelsea, but despite the Azeri side having lone striker Dino Ndlovu sent off, Atleti mustered just four attempts on target all game.

“I feel very good, with the enthusiasm of returning to work tomorrow in order to keep improving,” said Coach Diego Simeone.

“We had chances in the first half, but we didn’t take them, and that created anxiety and pressure in the second. We didn’t play with the clarity we needed to.”

Los Colchoneros have now drawn their last three matches and sit as many points behind second-placed Roma, with only three rounds left of the group stage.

“Now pessimism will take over from the run of draws, but I absolutely believe in this team,” added the Argentine.

“I signed [a new contract] three months ago, knowing what there was and what was coming.

“I have the peace of mind to wait until tomorrow for us to keep improving.”
