Malaga’s Gonzalez faces lengthy absence

Malaga defender Diego Gonzalez could miss up to four months of action as he undergoes knee surgery this week.

The 22-year-old arrived at La Rosaleda this summer from Sevilla in a €2m deal but Diario Sur report he has had a niggling knee injury which has recently become ‘significantly more troublesome’.

Gonzalez has started four league games for Michel’s side so far this season but has not featured since September’s 5-0 loss at Valencia due to the issue in his left knee.

The central defender will travel to Barcelona this week to undergo the surgery and will be sidelined until at least January, but four months may be a more realistic return date.

Without much depth in the position, reports indicate the club may reinvest in the January transfer window.
