Morata likely to miss Spain games

Spain are likely to be without Alvaro Morata for their final World Cup qualifiers after he suffered an injury during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Morata lasted just half an hour at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after he asked to be substituted, with reports in England suggesting his hamstring pulled up.

“[It is a] muscular problem,” Chelsea boss Antonio Conte said after the game.

“I don’t think it’s a serious problem because he stopped before it [could] become a serious injury.

“He said to me, ‘I prefer to stop myself, otherwise I risk a bad injury.’ The doctor now in the next [few] days has to check the situation, but I don’t think he’s available for the national team.”

Morata only joined the Blues over the summer from Real Madrid in a €70m deal and had scored seven goals in his first eight appearances, one of which came against Atletico Madrid midweek.

Chelsea no longer have Diego Costa on their books, leaving Michy Batshuayi as their only recognised backup.

Spain, on the other hand, could turn to one of Iago Aspas and Rodrigo Moreno or opt for a false nine when they face Albania and Israel over the next fortnight.
