Madrid & Barca up for FIFA awards

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will face off for the title of Best FIFA Men’s Player 2017, with Zinedine Zidane and Keylor Navas also nominated for awards.

Ronaldo is seen to be the favourite after firing Real Madrid to a La Liga and Champions League double last season, although Messi ended last season as Spain’s top goalscorer.

Joining the pair on the podium will be Neymar, who left Barca for Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record deal worth €222m over the summer.

However, the Brazilian’s inclusion has raised some eyebrows, given he was the lowest-scoring member of MSN last season and won just the Copa del Rey.

As for the other awards, Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is up for the Best Men’s Coach thanks to becoming the first trainer to defend the Champions League and lead Los Blancos to their first domestic title in five years.

Keylor Navas’ contributions between the sticks for Los Merengues, meanwhile, sees him in contention for Best Goalkeeper.

Finally, among the Puskas Award for best goal are Kevin-Prince Boateng, for his memorable team goal with Las Palmas, and Jordi Mboula, after his solo run and finish for Barcelona’s Under-19 team.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on October 23.
