Michel ‘not afraid’ of sack talk

Malaga boss Michel Gonzalez insists he is “not afraid” about the sack after leading the Andalusians to a fifth, straight defeat on Tuesday.

Malaga fell to the bottom of La Liga after a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Valencia, but while Michel admitted his players were in “a bad way”, he made it clear he was the right man to turn things around at La Rosaleda.

“The League is being tough on us,” the Coach said after the game.

“We had a good first half but still lost. The surprising thing is how the second half started and what happened in those eight minutes.

“There’s no justification or excuse. We have to get things right. Afraid about my future? It’s not up to me, but I’m not afraid of anything. I’m only thinking about Athletic.

“The players felt demoralised after taking so much punishment. It’s a very tough result to swallow, but I finished it as I started it.

“Would I understand being sacked? It’s not a question for me, my job is to work, take responsibility for results and look for improvement.

“I could understand it or not, but it’s not up to me. I still think that I’ll keep working and I want to raise the players’ morale. They’re only human and suffering.

“My morale remains intact. I’m sorry for the fans but also my players, they worked hard to turn things around, but we still couldn’t find their goal.

“What I have left to do is encourage them and instruct them to find solutions. We’re in a bad way mentally, but we must keep looking [for solutions].

“Players to blame? The focus must be directed towards me, not my players.”
