No new deal, reiterates Iniesta

Andres Iniesta reiterates “it’s not the case” that he is close to signing a new contract with Barcelona.

Iniesta had already been on record as contradicting Josep Maria Bartomeu’s claim that an agreement had been reached in principle for the midfielder to commit beyond the end of the season.

“Contract situation? It’s not new,” the reported Juventus target told Mundo Deportivo.

“My contract is running down, it’s been talked about for some time and things are going as they are. My only desire is to perform to the maximum and win trophies with the club.

“When there’s an agreement in principle, it’s assumed that everything is done, but as I understand it, it’s not the case.

“I’m not clear on when I’ll make my decision, but it’s because I’m not thinking about it.

“I’m only thinking about performing. My head, heart and body will decide. This is my home, but the situation is what it is and we’ll see what happens.

“Whether I stay or go, there will never be any kind of problem [with Barca].

“Bartomeu? I talked to him because I’d never put anything personal before a situation with the club.

“What I said was a misunderstanding, the words used weren’t wholly accurate. It wasn’t my intention to contradict the President.

“I told the truth about the situation. I can’t confirm anything right now.

“The situation is very specific because of how things are going. There are also people who are using this moment to add fuel to the fire.

“When there’s so much noise from the outside, I don’t think it’s a good thing, but people can express themselves as they like. From there, we’ll see.”
