Athletic’s stunning Athens comeback

Athletic Bilbao avoided a Greek tragedy by coming back from two goals behind to defeat Panathinaikos in their Europa League qualification match.

Robin Lod gave the hosts the lead just before the half hour mark before Bryan Cabezas doubled the advantage ten minutes after the break.

However, Aritz Aduriz headed home Iker Munain’s cross in the 67th minute before Oscar de Marcos finished from close range four minutes later to level the tie.

Experienced striker Aduriz completed a remarkable seven-minute spell for the Basques by chipping home a penalty to send the small band of travelling fans into raptures.

The return leg will take place at the San Mames next week with a place in the Europa League group stages at stake.
