Carvajal: Ronaldo’s ban excessive

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo's five-game suspension after his red card in Sunday’s Supercopa against Barcelona.

The Portuguese star was slapped with a five-game ban for the controversial red – one for his second yellow card and an additional four for placing his hands on the referee after the dismissal.

“The ban for that incident is excessive,” Carvajal told reporters at Tuesday’s press conference.

“Cristiano did not intend to act like that towards the referee and it all happened so quickly…the red card was very unfair.

“Of course there is frustration to be sent off when you shouldn't be so in that context the ban is excessive…I hope it is reduced.

“We all feel upset at this punishment as Cristiano is an important player for us – we hope the ban is reduced and he is back in action soon.”
