Ochoa joins Belgium’s Standard Liege

Former Malaga and Granada goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has signed for Belgian club Standard Liege as a free agent.

The Mexican international won last season’s Player of the Year award at El Grana on a loan spell from Malaga, despite conceding 82 goals in 38 appearances for the basement club.

The 31-year-old established himself as a star with America in his native Mexico before coming Ajaccio’s first-choice goalkeeper in France for three seasons.

After enjoying an impressive 2014 World Cup, he moved to Andalucia but only made 11 La Liga appearances for Malaga in his three years at the Costa del Sol club.

"Guillermo is a spectacular goalkeeper, he has wide international experience, in the Mexican league, in Ligue 1 in France, in the Spanish league and the Mexican national team," Standard Liege sporting director Oliver Renard told the club’s website.

Ochoa was largely understudy to Carlos Karmeni – who has now joined Fenerbahce – during his stint at La Rosaleda.
