Ceballos named Euro’s best player

Spain midfielder Dani Ceballos has been named Player of the Tournament for the European Under-21 Championship.

Ceballos started as a substitute for two of Spain’s five games in Poland but was particularly influential in the semi-finals against Italy, assisting Saul Niguez for his first goal in a 3-1 victory.

However, the Real Betis starlet was part of the Rojita team that lost 1-0 to Germany in Friday’s Final.

“It’s a bittersweet feeling,” he told UEFA.com.

“I’m pleased to be the best player but right now I’d swap the trophy to be a [European] champion.”

Ceballos, who also helped Spain’s Under-19 team to the 2015 European U19 Championship, is the fifth Spaniard to win the award after Manuel Sanchis (1986), Francesc Arnau (1998), Juan Mata (2011) and Thiago Alcantara (2013).

Saul, meanwhile, won the tournament’s Golden Boot thanks to his five goals, two more than the Silver Boot recipients, Marco Asensio and former Real Sociedad winger Bruma.
