Swans set for Mesa deal

Swansea City are on the verge of signing Las Palmas midfielder Roque Mesa after beating off competition from Roma and Sevilla, says a report.

According to Wales Online, the Swans are set to wrap up a deal in the region of €13m which would be the third most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Sevilla had been hopeful of reigniting their interest after seeing a €10m bid rejected by Los Amarillos last summer although along with Roma – now with sporting director Monchi – they appear to have been beaten to the 28-year-old’s signature.

Mesa, who has become renowned in La Liga for his ability to control the tempo of a game from a deep-lying midfield role, has recently been tipped with a call-up to the Spanish national team squad.

His sale would represent a club record for the Gran Canarians, who are willing to sanction the move despite the midfielder’s €30m release clause.
