Diego Simeone insists Atletico Madrid must not lose focus and keep winning after they reached the Champions League quarter-finals.
A stalemate was enough for Atleti to eliminate Bayer Leverkusen and make the last eight of Europe’s elite club competition for the fourth straight season, leaving Simeone understandably delighted but also cautious of over-confidence.
“I’m very happy for the club and the players,” the Coach said after the game.
“They’ve made this step [of the quarter-finals] again after a very complex tie, it was a great effort from the players and great work from the club.
“It makes us very happy that players who recently played for the youth team, like Saul and Thomas, are now in the first team, helping us reach the quarters.
“It was a very open game, they had chances in the second half and Oblak made some very good saves. Their goalkeeper also did very well to keep out the chances we had.
“An injection of morale? Winning is important, after Granada and now after this. We have to think about continuing to compete in the best way possible.
“Oblak? He’s been tremendous. He’s found his best level.”
