Jorge Sampaoli says Sevilla’s 2-1 victory over Real Betis on Saturday “is a double whammy” as his side provisionally moved top of La Liga.
Goals from Gabriel Mercado and Vicente Iborra secured a comeback win for Sevilla in the Andalusian derby to propel them into first place, courtesy of their superior head-to-head record against Real Madrid, and Sampaoli was especially pleased with how his team responded to going one down.
“Betis were better than us in all aspects during the first half so we had to change radically for the second because if the game went the same way, it’d have been impossible to come back,” the Coach said after the game.
“Still, the team gave a great response, we became domineering and created a lot of chances.
“They had a lot of chances too and looked for more than a draw, amidst unfavourable weather conditions.
“The joy today is that we’re together with Real Madrid at the top of the table provisionally, so it’s a double whammy.”
